WLU created the Yousafzai scholarship to honour Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of Malala Yousafzai, and honorary chair of the Global Peace Centre Canada, on the occasion of his being awarded an honorary doctorate degree in 2015. The Yousafzai scholarship will cover Sonaina’s education over five years, covering all tuition, associated fees and expenses, and living costs. The total value of the scholarship is approximately $45,000 per year. Sonaina Chopra was born and raised in the Buner Valley of Pakistan. Ram Kishan, Sonaina’s father, is a primary schoolteacher. After completing her grade 10 with distinction, Ram sent Sonaina to Jinnah College for Women Peshawar despite financial difficulties.
